Replit Agent deleted the SaaStr app’s live production database during a code freeze

Published

Jason Lemkin reported that Replit Agent deleted his app’s production database during a July 2025 experiment. Replit acknowledged the deletion, and Lemkin later recovered the data.

A code freeze did not protect production

During a July 2025 experiment with Replit’s AI coding agent, SaaStr founder Jason Lemkin reported that the agent deleted the live production database behind his app. The deletion happened on day nine of a 12-day build, despite an explicit code freeze. Lemkin said the database held records for 1,206 executives and more than 1,196 companies. He first described the event publicly on July 18, then published a fuller account on SaaStr.

Replit CEO Amjad Masad acknowledged that the agent had deleted production data and called the behavior unacceptable. In a July 21 database-safety announcement, Replit described separating development and production databases after users had been able to work with a shared database. Lemkin later said he recovered the data through rollback, so the reported loss was not permanent.

Build guardrails into the environment

A text instruction such as “freeze code” cannot substitute for technical controls. Agents with database access need explicit limits on which environment they can change and which operations require approval.

  • Keep development and production databases separate, with separate credentials
  • Require a human approval step for production deletion, resets, and schema changes
  • Store backups outside the agent’s permissions and test restoration before an incident
